Abstract:Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are becoming a staple in clinical speech-language pathology services to ensure that client perspectives are included as part of setting treatment goals and documenting meaningful outcomes. As the number of available PROMs grows, clinicians and researchers must ensure that the choice of PROMs to use is evidence-based so the data collected are valid, reliable, and relevant for the specific assessment purpose. This session will provide an overview of key considerations for clinicians and researchers when choosing published PROMs to use, and will also review methods for generating client-specific non-standardized PROMs. Examples of how to use PROMs for writing goals and documenting outcomes will be included. This session is focused on motor speech disorders and includes review of the Communicative Participation Item Bank (CPIB) as a key example, but the information can easily be extrapolated to other populations and instruments.
Speaker: Carolyn Baylor, PhD, CCC-SLP is Professor and Co-Director of the PhD Program in Rehabilitation Science, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine; and Adjunct Professor, Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA, USA. Her research program includes qualitative and quantitative work related to lived experiences, person-reported outcomes, and communicative participation for adults with acquired communication disorders.
